I am a public safety communications and emergency management professional with twenty five years across radio system consulting, agency communications logistics, and frontline emergency services. Communications and radio have been the throughline of the whole career. They are the reason I went into the fire service, into EMS, and into medicine.

Since I was sixteen the goal has been the same: to work at the intersection of Emergency Management and Communications, where the radio meets the mission.

Focus areas

• Amateur Radio. FCC Amateur Extra, callsign AF4CZ, and GMRS. Licensing and exam preparation, emergency communications, and the volunteer service that backs up public safety when the primary systems are gone.
• Public Safety Communications. P25 and land mobile radio system design and evaluation, interoperability and patching, coverage and in building performance, encryption and key management, and the logistics that decide whether a radio actually works when someone keys up.
• Weather and Space Weather. How severe weather and solar activity degrade radio propagation and public warning, what the warning products actually mean, and how operations should change when conditions do.
• Emergency Management. NIMS and ICS, emergency operations centers and plans, continuity of operations, mutual aid, exercises, and recovery. ICS-100 through 800, with ICS-300 and ICS-400 in residence at the Center for Domestic Preparedness.
• Emerging Technologies. FirstNet and public safety LTE, push to talk over cellular, satellite and direct to device services, Next Generation 911, and how each one fits alongside the radio system rather than replacing it.
