When the repeater drops, the cell towers saturate, and the internet goes dark, the people still passing traffic are usually licensed amateurs with HF rigs in their basements. Here is how a small fire or EMS agency actually plugs them into operations - before the next storm, not during it. [...]
Every chief eventually hears the pitch: put a screen in the cab, wire it to dispatch, and let the truck receive calls, log status, and pull up maps without a word on the radio. Some of that promise is real and worth having. Some of it is harder than the [...]
Most volunteer and small career departments end up choosing between four radio systems. The wrong choice locks you into a multi-year decision that costs five figures to undo. The right choice often looks boring on paper. Here is what each system actually does, what the trade-offs are, and what to [...]
Community Emergency Response Team volunteers can multiply your reach in the first hours of a disaster, but only if you can talk to them. Most departments discover the gap at the worst possible time: the volunteers are on the ground, doing useful work, and there is no reliable way to [...]
A repeater dies. A trunked site goes offline. A microwave link drops in a thunderstorm. Your crews are still on a working fire and the radios just got a lot quieter. This is the SOP framework that keeps everyone alive and on the same channel when the system fails. [...]
The base station in your watch room is only as good as the antenna feeding it, and that antenna is only as good as where you put it. Most small departments never think about the radio hanging on the wall until the day a crew keys up from the far [...]
Your county just spent $40 million on a shiny P25 Phase II trunked system. The vendor demo showed perfect coverage. Then a crew goes to a basement on a working fire and the radios stop working. This is not a defect. This is physics, and it is why simplex belongs [...]
Every field guide tells you the national interoperability channels exist. Very few tell you how to program them correctly, when to actually switch to them, or why the mutual aid company from the next county still can't hear you when they arrive. Here is the working chief's version. [...]
If you run a small fire or EMS department, the odds are good that a radio conversation is coming your way, if it has not already. Someone on a regional board is talking about narrowbanding, spectrum efficiency, and moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2. This guide walks through what [...]
Almost every serious incident review, no matter the hazard or the region, circles back to the same short list of communications problems. Not exotic ones. The same failures show up on a working structure fire, a multi-agency wildland run, a large crash, and a long extrication. The good news is [...]
