On a small incident, the person running the scene can also keep track of who is on what channel. On a growing incident, that stops working fast. The Communications Unit Leader, or COML, is the incident command role that exists so the incident commander is not also trying to be [...]
Almost every failure your agency drills for is local and brief. A long, wide-area power or infrastructure failure is neither, and it arrives with a cruel timing problem: the moment your radios, phones, and dispatch consoles are most likely to fall silent is the exact moment the public needs you [...]
A radio system is only as reliable as the power behind it. When the grid drops, the tower site, the dispatch console, and the handheld on a firefighter's chest all keep working or they do not, and that outcome was decided long before the lights went out. Backup power is [...]

A portable radio is only as reliable as the battery clipped to the back of it, and the battery is the part most likely to quit at the exact moment you need to talk. It rarely fails on the bench where you would notice. It fails on the fireground, in [...]
On an ordinary shift your department has exactly as many portable radios as it has people who need one, and not one more. That balance holds right up until the day it does not: a working structure fire that pulls three mutual aid companies onto your ground, a wildland run [...]
